The Recording Academy unveiled the nominees for the 2024 Grammy Awards on Friday, with SZA leading the nominations with nine, followed by multiple nominations for Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Boygenius, Jon Batiste, Victoria Monét and Billie Eilish.

SZA’s nine nominations include record, album and song of the year, off her acclaimed sophomore effort, “SOS.” After SZA’s nominations, Monét, Phoebe Bridgers each earned 7, with six nominations each for producer Jack Antonoff, Batiste, Boygenius, Brandy Clark, Cyrus, Eilish, Rodrigo and Swift.

Swift can potentially become the all-time leader for album of the year wins if “Midnights” wins in that category in February, making it her fourth win – she is currently tied with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon with three album wins. With the 2024 nominations, Swift has became the first person ever to be nominated for song of the year seven times.

The 66th annual Grammy Awards will air Feb. 4 live on CBS and Paramount+ from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Dua Lipa’s new single, titled “Houdini” just dropped, after the hitmaker teased the music for weeks, sharing cryptic posts – one of which featured a photo of her holding a key between her teeth (a nod to the famous Hungarian-American illusionist Harry Houdini.)

Dua’s third studio album will be released sometime in 2024, with Lipa also sharing that this record will have a different sound, but she is keeping it pop, “lest her ‘fans have a meltdown,” (as she was quoted as saying.) Dua also said she doesn’t want to “alienate” her fans, but her new sound on the album will see her move away from disco and embrace the sounds of “1970s-era psychedelia.”

“Houdini’ marks the first new solo music released Dua since her 2020 LP, Future Nostalgia.  You can now stream ‘Houdini’ – here.

SAG-AFTRA reaches tentative deal with studios to end strike after 118 days

shutterstock_2331877931998680

After an historic strike of 118 days, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) – the union that represents performers on film and television – announced on Wednesday that they have reached a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP). The strike will officially come to an end at 12:01am on Thursday, November 9th. The last strike of this nature was in 1980, and it lasted for three months.

SAG-AFTRA said in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly: “We are thrilled and proud to tell you that today your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP. As of 12:01am PT on Nov. 9, our strike is officially suspended and all picket locations are closed. We will be in touch in the coming days with information about celebration gatherings around the country.”. SAG-AFTRA says that its tentative agreement with the studios is worth more than $1 billion over three years and added that it has “extraordinary scope” and “unprecedented provisions”, but added that the full details of the agreement will not be provided until it is reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board on Friday.

The AMPTP shared in their own statement that the agreement is, “the biggest contract-on-contract gains in the history of the union” and one that represents a “new paradigm”… It gives SAG-AFTRA the biggest contract-on-contract gains in the history of the union, including the largest increase in minimum wages in the last forty years; a brand new residual for streaming programs; extensive consent and compensation protections in the use of artificial intelligence; and sizable contract increases on items across the board. The AMPTP is pleased to have reached a tentative agreement and looks forward to the industry resuming the work of telling great stories.”

SAG-AFTRA joined the Writers’ Guild of America on the picket lines, as the WGA had been on strike since May. Actors were on strike since July 14, after the guild’s national board voted unanimously to launch the work stoppage. Following the expiration of their contract on June 30 and a 12-day extension period, the union and the AMPTP failed to reach an agreement. The strike of both SAG-AFTRA and WGA marked a historic moment in the Hollywood labor movement, as the first concurrent strike between the guilds since 1960.

Megan Thee Stallion shares the video for “Cobra”

shutterstock_2275546579169754

Megan Thee Stallion has dropped the video for her latest song, her first single under Megan’s new independent music and entertainment entity, Hot Girl Productions (since formally cutting ties with 1501 Certified Entertainment). The music video for ‘Cobra,’ directed by Douglas Bernardt, sees Megan crawling out of a snake’s mouth, peels off a layer of her skin, and performs a dance routine to a guitar solo.

“Cobra” follows Megan Thee Stallion’s collab with Cardi B, “Bongos” and her Dicks: The Musical contribution “Out Alpha the Alpha.” Megan said of the song: “Cobras exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their treats. Emulating the cobra helps one be more confident in the person they are within.”
