Timothee Chalamet to portray young Willy Wonka in prequel film ‘Wonka’

Timothee Chalamet has been tapped to portray a young Willy Wonka in an upcoming prequel film from Warner Bros. titled Wonka. The musical will explore the fictional candy maker from Roald Dahl’s book before he opens up his signature chocolate factory. Gene Wilder portrayed Willy Wonka in 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and then Johnny Depp then portrayed the character in director Tim Burton’s 2005 version, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Paddington director Paul King is helming Wonka, with David Heyman (Harry Potter) producing and Simon Rich writing the script. Wonka is tentatively set to debut in theaters on March 17, 2023.

The 2021 Billboard Music Awards were held on Sunday from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Nick Jonas.  The Weeknd was the big winner of the evening, taking home the night’s biggest prize, Top Artist.

The late Pop Smoke won Top Billboard 200 album for his project Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. Pop Smoke’s mother accepted the award on his behalf and paid homage to her son. Machine Gun Kelly won Top Rock Artist. The annual awards show announced a handful of winners before the live event, including The Weeknd winning Top Male Artist and Taylor Swift winning Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artist. BTS took home Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist and Top Social Artist. Pop Smoke won Top New Artist and Drake won Top Streaming Songs Artist.

Drake was honored with the Artist of the Decade Award, and Pink with the Icon Award. Pink took the stage and performed a number of her hit songs, including “All I know So Far,” “So What,” “Who Knew,” and “Cover Me in Sunshine” alongside her 9-year-old daughter Willow Sage Hart.

Nominees and winners are based on fan interactions with music, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement, as tracked by Billboard. A full list of winners can be found on Billboard’s official website.

“Spiral: From the Book of Saw” tops North American box office for 2nd weekend in a row

“Spiral: From the Book of Saw,” the ninth and latest film in the Saw series, was once again No. 1 at the weekend box office with an estimated 4.55 million in earning during its second weekend of release. The Lionsgate’s R-rated film has grossed 15.82 million dollars in North America in 10 days after its initial release, pushing the franchise’s total to over 1 billion dollars at global box office.

Starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson and Max Minghella, the sequel follows a police detective who is unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery and finds himself at the center of a killer’s morbid game.

Miley Cyrus inks development deal with NBC Universal, including three specials

Miley Cyrus has signed a talent and development deal with NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, which includes a first-look arrangement between Cyrus’ production company Hopetown Entertainment (which she runs with her mother and manager Tish Cyrus). Hopetown will develop scripted and unscripted projects for the NBCU outlets including NBC, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, SYFY, Universal Kids, USA and Peacock. Cyrus may serve as a producer, performer and/or host on any number of network, cable, streaming and syndication programs.

Cyrus will also star in three specials for NBCU, starting with the Pride concert special “Stand By You,” for Peacock. The one-hour special was filmed in Nashville and features Cyrus singing her hits and her take on classics, “all in the spirit of Pride.”

Cyrus said in a statement: “I have had an incredible long-lasting relationship with NBC for years. Many memorable moments in my career have been shared and supported by NBCU. This feels like a natural progression and I am looking forward to creating content that we love and hope everyone who watches does too. We’re starting this journey together with a Pride special on Peacock to celebrate a month we both want to highlight with this concert event.”

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy to reprise roles in ‘Hocus Pocus 2’

Disney+ announced on Thursday that Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy will reprise their roles as the Sanderson Sisters in Hocus Pocus 2, to debut next year. The sequel to the Halloween cult classic Hocus Pocus will debut exclusively on Disney+ in 2022, with production beginning this fall.

Director Anne Fletcher said in a statement: “Now more than ever, people need to laugh. We should be laughing every day, and there is so much fun to be had with these three unbelievable women playing delicious characters from such a beloved film.”  Fletcher is taking over directing responsibilities for Hocus Pocus 2 from director Adam Shankman, who said in a statement: “As heartbroken as I am that I won’t be able to direct my friends Bette, Sarah Jessica and Kathy in what is sure to be nothing short of a major event for Disney+ due to scheduling conflicts, I couldn’t be more pleased to be handing over the reigns to Anne who has brought so much laughter and joy into people’s lives with her previous work.”

Universal has released the first trailer for the “Dear Evan Hansen” movie, premiering in theaters on Sept. 24. Ben Platt returns in his Tony-winning titular role in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway hit musical. The cast also includes Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore.

“Dear Evan Hansen” opened on Broadway in December 2016, taking home six Tony Awards, including best musical and best actor in a musical for Platt. The original Broadway cast album, which includes the catchy songs “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through a Window” and “Sincerely, Me,” also won a Grammy.

“Dear Evan Hansen” follows Evan Hansen, an anxious and isolated high school student who writes letters to himself. Evan’s classmate Connor Murphy gets a hold of one of his letters and dies by suicide with the note in his pocket, leading Connor’s parents to believe it was a suicide note addressed to Evan. Soon, Evan gets caught in a complicated lie, pretending to have been Connor’s friend and forming a fabricated relationship with the Murphy family.

Jason Derulo and girlfriend Jena Frumes welcome a baby boy

Jason Derulo and girlfriend Jena Frumes are parents. Derulo confirmed the news on social media, posting a video and saying: “The happiest day of my life bringing our baby boy (Jason King Derulo) home. He’s so lucky to have such a strong caring hero of a mother.”

Frumes, a social media influencer, captioned an Instagram post:“A glimpse of my first week with our healthy handsome little king. Life now has so much more meaning & I am so grateful. I’m so so so in love with this little boy he’s everything I never knew I needed.” Jena gave her followers a peek into her and Jason’s first few moments as new parents. In one photo, the couple posed together with huge smiles on their faces as the 27-year-old influencer Frumes cradled their son. Another image showed the two in the hospital bed with their little one.
